Santander
enjoys extraordinary scenic beauty due mainly to its
coastal location – a peninsula surrounded
by the bay and the coast whose cliffs open onto the
Cantabrian Sea. However, perhaps it is its beaches that
are best known and appreciated. Its winding alignment
bordered by 5km of coast gives tribute to both small
and extensive stretches of sand: some sheltered from
the winds with calm, quiet waters (Los Peligros, La
Magdalena and Bikinis Beaches); others open to the Cantabrian
Sea, with better surfs (El Camello, La Concha, La Primera,
La Segunda, and Castañeda, Molinucos and Mataleñas Beaches).
Among these beaches, green spaces of outstanding beauty
appear on the coast, such as Piquío, with
its characteristic
gardens that sit above a rocky enclave that separates
the two beaches at El Sardinero like the prow of a boat
cutting through the sea. Nearby, and filled with plants
and trees, the Magdalena Park (on its own peninsula)
faces onto Mouro Island and the powerful Cantabrian
Sea and is, alongside the Royal Palace, picture perfect
and typical of Santander.
